Rayne High faces Ville Platte

By: Lisa Soileaux
The Rayne High Wolves will try to improve their season record to 4-0 on Friday as they face Ville Platte High School of 5-2A.

Ville Platte defeated cross-tow rivals Sacred Heart 34-26 during the annual grug matchup last week of the Tee Cotton Bowl, the fifth-straight TCB win for the Bulldogs.

At 1-2 overall, the Bulldogs will have to step it up to de-rail Rayne High’s perfect season thus far at 3-0.

Ville Platte senior Darious Poullard was a leader last week, rushing for 248 yards on 27 carries, including an 88-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. He was crowned the VPHS MVP of the ball game.

Yards for the Rayne High win were spread among a few players each keeping it under 100 yards but producing when needed despite lead rusher Brody Bourque still out.

Putting up numbers on the ground were Javon Cormier (5 carries-61 yards), Johnathan Dugas (1-55), Trent Duhon (6-50), Jalen Williams (5-41), RJ Buchanan (3-30) and Dannie Harmon (2-29) as the Wolves totaled 330 rushing yards on the night.

Wolf junior quarterback Clarence Leger also added to the rushing stats for the night, having thre touches for 36 yards.

In the air, Leger was 5-for-6 for 83 yards. On the receiving end were Buchanan (2-49) and Dannie Harmon (1-29).

Rayne tallied 413 total offensive yards for the win.

But, what really shined last week for Rayne High was their defense, seeing the Wolves recovering five fumbles from Abbeville and limiting the Wildcats’ offense to only 173 yards.

Leading the fumble bonanza were Buchanan, Quinn Guidry, Patrick Charles, Dugas and Tevin Davis.

Defensive leaders for Rayne High in the Abbeville blow-out were Billy Marcantel, Malcolm Winbush, Cooper Bouillion, RJ Buchanan, Dannie Harmon, Cody Manuel, Patrick Charles, Andrew Broussard and Grant Menard.

The Wolves will host Ville Platte Friday, Sept. 23, during the Wolves’ 2011 Homecoming Game. Action is set to begin at 7 p.m. at Wolf Stadium.
