Rayne to hold Frog Festival

RAYNE – Once again, festival goers will be sheltered from the hot sun and/or rain when the 2008 Rayne Frog Festival opens under the 20,000 sq. ft. pavilion located on the festival grounds just off Interstate 10 in Rayne. The 36th annual festival will be held on the weekend after Labor Day, September 5 – 7.

Gate admission for the weekend is $1 for children under 12 years of age. Adult admission prices on Friday is $5, Saturday until 3 p.m. - $5, after 3 p.m. - $7 and on Sunday - $5.

Inside the Civic Center, the Frog Festival Arts and Crafts Show, hosted by the Rayne Beautification Board, will be open from 10 am to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 10 am to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

The ‘big gig’ features an exciting lineup of musicians that will be entertaining under the pavilion, starting on Friday with Jackie Callier/Ivy Dugas and Cajun Cousins at 7 p.m., sponsored by Chef Roy’s Frog City Café. Jaryd Lane takes the stage from 8:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Wayne Toups & ZydeCajun plays from 10:30 p.m. to 12 midnight.

Booths open at 9 am on Saturday morning.

The highlight of Saturday’s activities will be the Grand Parade, stepping off at 1 p.m. from American Legion Drive, traveling up North Adams Avenue and the Boulevard and ending at the festival fairgrounds. Entry fees for the parade are $75 for businesses, elected officials and candidates for office and $25.00 for individual entries and non-profit organizations. Saturday entertainment includes a Jam Session from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., Glenn Jacquneaux & Cajun Friends from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. The evening kicks off with Krossfyre at 6 p.m. followed by legendary recording artist, Percy Sledge at 9 p.m. Closing the night’s lineup is favorite Jamie Bergeron & the Kickin’ Cajuns from 11 p.m. to 12:30 am.

The signature event of the festival, the popular Frog Racing and Jumping contests, open to the public, will be held from 11 am to 1 p.m. under the pavilion. Register and rent a frog from the Rayne Jaycees, who co-sponsor the event with the Rayne-Acadian Tribune. The contests are open to all age groups, from young children to adults.
