Rayne inmate captured
Rayne Chief of Police Carroll Stelly announces John J. Smith, an escaped prisoner, has been captured in Baton Rouge by the Baton Rouge Police Department. The arrest occurred on Wednesday February 15, after he led officers in a vehicle pursuit in the city-owned 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 Truck that he stole when he escaped on Feb. 4 at 4 p.m.
Smith, 42, stole a white Dodge truck, 4 door with city of Rayne decals on it. Smith is a Department of Correction prisoner.
Baton Rouge police reported around 8 p.m. Wednesday, uniformed patrol police sported the truck leaving a motel on Florida Boulevard and attempted to stop it.
The pursuit ended at North Lobdell and Choctow when Smith vehicle crashed into a citizen's vehicle.
Smith fled on foot from the crash site but was tracked down by a K-9 unit.
When Smith was transported to Earl K. Long Hospital for treatment of a dog bite,Baton Rouge police said, Smith began to pound his head agains the prisoner screen, further injuring himself.
John J. Smith is being charged with unauthorized use of a vehicle, flight from an officer, resisting an officer and hit and run charges by the Baton Rouge Police Department.
Smith will be transferred to Rayne to face the escape and theft charges.
Chief Stelly thanked all agencies for their help and especially Baton Rouge PD for capturing this fugitive.
