Rayne picks next mayor Saturday

Who will be Rayne’s next mayor?

That question will be answered Saturday, Dec. 8, as city residents cast their ballots in a runoff contest between Charles “Chuck” Robichaux and Roland Boudreaux.

The winner will finish the remaining two-year term of Jim “Jimbo” Petitjean, who will become Acadia Parish assessor on Jan. 1, 2013.

In primary election balloting Nov. 6, Robichaux, a Republican, finished in the number one position, collecting 1,618 votes (44.39%).

Boudreaux, a Democrat, finished the primary balloting in second place with 1,343 votes (36.84%).

Voters who supported Cheryl Richard, the city’s former cultural director, are expected to play a deciding role in selecting the new mayor. Richard collected 684 votes (18.77%) in her losing mayoral bid.

Interest in the mayor’s race has been constant in early voting, reports Acadia Parish Registrar of Voters Billie Meyers.

As of Monday, Dec. 3, a total of 565 ballots were cast in the race for mayor of Rayne, with 472 of those cast in person. Mail-in ballot will be accepted until Friday.

In addition to the race for mayor of Rayne, there are only two other issues on the parish ballot: the runoff for the Third Congressional seat and a tax for Mermentau.

Parish-wide, a total of 2,132 ballots were cast, with 1,673 cast in person.

Congressional race

The outcome of a bitterly contested runoff campaign between Rep. Charles Boustany and Rep. Jeff Landry, both Republican incumbents, will decide who will represent much of South Louisiana after the previous third and seventh districts were combined following the 2010 census count.

In the Nov. 6 primary, Boustany collected 139,123 (44.68%) of the votes, while Landry garnished 93,527 (30.04%) votes. Democratic challenger Ron Richard of Lake Charles collected enough votes to ensure neither Boustany or Landry would win outright. Richard later endorsed Boustany in his race over Landry.

Polls will be open from 6 a.m.to 8 p.m.
