Rayne shuts out Abbeville

ABBEVILLE – The Rayne Wolves claimed their third win in as many games Friday, romping Abbeville, 27-0, spoiling the Wildcats’ homecoming celebration.

“This is a good, hard-fought win for us tonight,” stated Rayne High head coach Curt Ware of Friday’s win over Abbeville.

“Our defense played real hard tonight and it shows by the scoreboard,” relating to the shutout. “Both teams played hard, but we seemed to work things out in the second half to wear them down and score.”

One of Ware’s main concern of his Wolves is the injury list.

“We have a few banged up guys and we hope to get them better soon,” as he noted to three-year starter R.J. Buchanan, who came out the game near halftime with a knee injury.

“We’ll find out tomorrow how serious his (R.J.) injury is, Ware continued. “When you don’t have your starters in there, the ones you’ve been working with for months, it always throws a kink in your game.”

With a scoreless first quarter as both teams were feeling out the field, Rayne finally touched the end zone late in the second quarter. The drive was setup by back-to-back quarterback sacks by Wolves Andrew Broussard and Grant Menard, forcing Abbeville with a deep punt and good field position for the Rayne.

The 53-yard drive, provided by runs from Jalen Williams, Trent Duhon and Javon Cormier, Williams punched it in from four yards for the first Rayne score. With only 27 seconds remaining in the first half of play, Ty Delahoussaye split the uprights for the extra point and a 7-0 lead heading into the halftime break.

With an empty third quarter by both squads, the Rayne offense found their momentum in the last quarter for a trio of scores.

Rayne’s first score of the last quarter was the result of a long 95-yard drive. Williams and Duhon teamed up once again for rushing downs, resulting in a break-away 35-yard touchdown score for Williams. Delahoussaye booted another extra point for a 14-0 Rayne High lead.

With a four-and-out drive interrupted by a key tackle by Dillon Soileaux and Desmond Cole on a Wildcat fake punt, the Wolves took over at the 28-yard line. With Williams around the side and Duhon up the middle, the Wolves lit up the scoreboard once again with a Williams’ five-yard touchdown run. The conversion failed and the Wolves were up 20-0 with five minutes remaining in the contest.

On Abbeville’s first and 10 near midfield, quarterback Ross Duhon miscued a pitch-out, resulting in a fumble recovery by Wolf Dannie Harmon, who scoops up the pigskin and tip-toes down the left sideline 50 yards for a defensive score. Delahoussaye booted the extra point for the eventual final score of 27-0 for the Wolves.

The majority of Rayne’s offense came on the ground with 326 yards. Duhon earned 146 yards on 19 carries on the night, while Williams had 21 touches for 143 yards and three touchdowns. Buchanan collected 21 yards on four carried before his injury.

Rayne went to the air three times on the night with quarterback Clarence Leger connecting with Dannie Harmon for a 37-yard completion.

Rayne’s defense held Abbeville’s offense to a total 135 yards. Leading tackle stats on the night were Cody Manuel (9 tackles, 2 assists), Andrew Broussard (8 tackles, 4 assists), Billy Mercantile (5 tackles, 4 assists), four tackles by Dannie Harmon and Brice Meche, and three tackles for Grant Menard, Dylan Soileaux, Hunter Keely and Quinn Guidry.

In addition, the Rayne defense collected three fumbles from the Abbeville offense, including Dannie Harmon, Andrew Broussard and Tyler LeJeune.

Abbeville’s Jon LeBlanc and Ross Duhon were limited to 73 and 38 rushing yards, respectively.

Ty Delahoussaye came up short on a long 45-yard field goal attempt, but added three extra points on the evening. He also averaged 40 yards on two punts, while averaging 51 yards on five kickoffs for 256 yards.

The Wolves will complete their third of three-straight road games Friday as they travel to Ville Platte.
