Rayne tops Welsh
WELSH – The Rayne Wolves improved to 2-0 on the season Friday with a 42-20 road pounding of the Welsh Greyhounds.
It’s good to start the season (2-0) for sure, but week by week the competition keeps getting tougher,” said RHS coach Curt Ware. “We have to keep improving as well. We have a few little things to work on, but I think we’re heading in the right direction.”
The Wolves looked impressive on both sides of the ball with 13 of the 20 Greyhound points coming against the Wolves’ second team.
Welsh struck first after the Greyhounds turned a Rayne mistake into a scoring drive when quarterback Payton Fox dashed across the goal line from five yards out to take a 7-0 lead in the first quarter.
Then, the Rayne offense turned it on, getting the ball at their own 22 and they never looked back. Runs by Bourque, Williams, and Leon moved the ball down the field before Clerance Leger finds Leon in the end zone for Rayne’s first score and his first touchdown through the air this season.
Welsh’s ensuing drive ended abruptly as the Wolves force a fumble on the first play and Aaron Chaisson scoops it up for another Rayne possession at the Welsh 25.
Bourque took the first play up the middle to the 8-yard line where he finished up the drive with a 3-yard touchdown run.
Rayne’s next possession started at the Welsh 45. Back to back losses see the Wolves facing a third and long when Leger completes another pass, this one to Dannie Harmon, and Harmon finds the end zone from 48 yards out.
Another Welsh three and out gave Leger and his squad the ball at their own 30. Back to back big plays of 31 and 24 yards from sophomore back Jaylen Williams put the Wolves in the red zone again. And it doesn’t take long before Bourque pounds his way up the middle and into the end zone for his second score of the night to give the Wolves a 28-7 lead just before the half.
Action in the third quarter was limited as both teams struggled to get anything going offensively due to solid defense.
But Rayne’s Brody Bourque opened things up in the 4th quarter when he scored his third touchdown of the night to put the Wolves up 35-7.
The Rayne second team defense starts off strong, but then they give up a 77-yard touchdown run to Jacob Daigle to cut the lead to 35-14.
The Wolves answer back though, when Jaylen Williams finds running room again, this time for 73 yards and his first score of the night to extend the lead to 42-14.
Welsh answered when Tre Cooper scrambles 41 yards for the score.
Jaylen Williams led the Wolves ground attack with 177 yards and one touchdown while Brody Bourque ended the night with 134 yards and three scores. Defensively, Aaron Chaisson was all over the field with 15 tackles and one fumble recovery. Also recording turnover recoveries for the Wolves were Kourtsie Bernard and Dequincy Senegal.
Next Friday the Wolves will host the Beau Chene Gators for their Homecoming game.
