A Rayne woman is facing charges for leaving her children in her vehicle unattended Tuesday evening, September 1. The vehicle caught fire and passersby were able to safely pull the
children from the vehicle.
Lt. Craig Nicholas, Ville Platte Police, said he was working with the Evangeline Parish District Attorney, to see what charges would be filed against Kelly Miller, 26, a white female residing at 402 Elizabeth Drive, Rayne.
Kelly Miller, of 402 Elizabeth Dr., Rayne, was charged with improper supervision of a juvenile and child desertion.
Miller arrived at the Evangeline Parish Courthouse Tuesday evening to bond a friend out of jail. Police indicate she went inside the courthouse and left her two children unattended in her vehicle with the ignition on.
While Miller was inside the courthouse, Nicholas said the vehicle, a Dodge Caravan, caught fire. The children, an 11-month-old and five-year-old, were pulled from the vehicle by passersby. The children are now in the custody of a family member.
The Ville Platte Fire Department responded to the scene at 8:27 p.m. Two trucks and 12 firefighters answered the call.
