Rebels place second at cross country meet

BELL CITY – The Midland Rebels kicked their the 2010 cross country season in impressive fashion last week, placing second at the Bell City Bruin Invitational.

Midland brought a total of 17 runners to the event and had seven of them place in the top 30. Seventy-six runners competed.

“We brought a lot of kids to the meet and I am very proud of them all,” said MHS coach Todd Briley. “They all competed really hard.”

Midland’s second-place finish was made even more impressive due to the field, which included 5A Barbe, LaGrange and Sulphur, Class 4A St. Louis, DeRidder and Sam Houston and Class AA Hamilton Christian and South Beauregard.

The only Class B schools competing in the meet were Midland, Lacassine, Bell City, Grand Lake and Hackberry.

“This was a big meet for us,” said Briley. “All the offseason conditioning that we do is paying off. We placed second (at the Class B state meet) last year and we’re hoping to be in contention for the title again this year.”

Midland was once again led by two-time state champion Michael Primeaux, who placed third in the meet with a time of 10:53.5.

Zach Stone of Barbe was the individual champion, finishing in a time of 10:49.9. He was followed by Hamilton’s Blair Henderson in a time of 10:52.1.

Mdiland’s Chase Vincent placed sixth (11:38.4), Jake Gautreaux 14th (12:11.8) and Devin Gautreaux 19th (12:22.1). Cody Stutes and Alan Vondenstein placed 25th and 26th in 12:33.0 and 12:34.9 respectively while Stephen Primeaux was No. 29 (12:37.3)

On the girls’ side, Ariel Pousson placed 12th with a time of 15:02.9.

In the junior varsity meet, Midland took the top two spots. Floyd Baker ran a 12:09 to win the event while Andrew Hains placed second in a time of 12:53. Alan Fontenot was fourth.

The Rebels will be in action again on Oct. 9 when they travel to Lake Charles to participate in the McNeese Cowboy Stampede.
