Recreation district hears updates on proposal

The Evangeline Parish Recreation Board met Thursday, June 19, to hear updates on the proposed sports complex, which would include baseball and softball fields, basketball and tennis courts, a walking trail and a playground.
In October 2007, the board approved the purchase of 60 acres from Dr. Greg Ardoin at a total cost of approximately $376,000. These funds came from a grant of $380,000. The property is located west of Lithcote Road and south of Industrial Road. The board purchase that property because it would be convenient for residents in the city and outside the city.
With the leftover funds from the grant, nearly $4,000, the board agreed to pay Ronnie Landreneau and Associates for their work.
The board also approved the hiring of Landreneau for the design phase of the facility. Landreneau said surveys would be performed on the property and they would create designs for the drainage system and the facilities themselves. Landreneau said he will then come to the board with a cost estimate and to put the project out for bid whenever the funds are available.
Board Chairman Michael Dess Fontenot said they currently have $250,000 in the bank from grant money and expect to receive more in the near future. However, he did not know how much more grant money would be received, but stated Senator Eric LaFleur was working in Baton Rouge to help acquire more funding for the project. The estimated cost of the entire project is $1.2 million.
The board also asked Landreneau to help it begin the process of having the property annexed by the city. Landreneau said he would need to review information about the city’s corporation limit and other factors before he could tell the board how to proceed.
In other business, the board formed a design and planning committee to help Landreneau draw up plans for the facilities. This committee will consist of Fontenot, Desmond Thomas and Chris Ortego.
