Reed, Soileaux earn top honors

CROWLEY – Notre Dame and Rayne High dominated their opponents in District 5-AAA play this season, finishing up league play at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively.

With Notre Dame winning over 20 games and Rayne 17, it is no wonder that each team earned one of the top two honors on the All-District team that was recently announced by the league’s coaches.

Notre Dame’s Lance Reed was a unanimous selection for the Coach of the Year honor while Rayne’s Lindsey Soileaux edged out Notre Dame’s Kelsey Brown for the Most Valuable Player award.

Reed, in just his second season at Notre Dame, led the Lady Pios to a 21-9 record and an appearance in the Fast Pitch 56 tournament. It was the Lady Pios’ first appearance in the tournament since winning it in 2004.

Notre Dame finished 8-0 in league play before bouncing Clark and Catholic High of New Iberia in the first two rounds of the playoffs. The Lady Pios title run fell short in the third round when they dropped a 9-1 quarterfinal decision to Winnfield at Sulphur’s Frasch Park.

Soileaux helped lead the Lady Wolves to a runnersup showing in league play and a second-round playoff appearance where they fell to eventual state champion St. Charles, 4-1.

Soileaux finished her senior campaign with a .519 batting average in district play in addition to hitting .408 overall. She also collected 14 doubles, four triples and one home run while driving in 30 runs. The utility player, who mainly played third base for most of the season, also posted a record of 2-1 on the mound.

Brown was also a defensive standout, committing just two errors in 107 chances. She recorded 30 put-outs and 75 assists to finish her senior year with a fielding percentage of .981.

Notre Dame’s Amelia Lavergne and Hannah Godeaux each made the squad as pitchers along with Crowley’s Tiffany Trahan and Rayne’s Mariel Meche

Lavergne was 4-0 in district play and 7-4 overall, posting an earned run average of 2.06. She struck out 37 batters in 68 innings.
