Relay for Life events discussed: Teams, sponsors, supporters needed
Ville Platte’s Relay for Life (RFL) is May 9.
Organizers are still recruiting teams, sponsors, monetary donations, door prizes and guest speakers. Their goal is to make this more of a public health fair and bring awareness of screening mixed in with the entertainment and food that has been present at the event year-after-year.
Remember, everything collected at this Relay is returned to the community. Recently, Savoy Cancer Center was a recipient of funds. Last year’s breakdown of Evangeline Parish’s $19,300 raise included $2,000 for expenses and 65 percent of the remaining $17,300 for cancer patients in this parish. Two families stayed at Hope Lodge for 40 nights (approximately $100 per night), 4.25 percent; 30 percent to research at Tulane University in New Orleans and LSU in Shreveport.
As we near this year’s relay, organizers have planned several events included a bucket drive April 4, a pageant at Family Life Center April 25, and the First Annual Brandy Roberie Co-Ed Softball Tournament May 1, 2, and 3.
This year’s relay will be at the Ville Platte Civic Center from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Some of the highlights will include the Miss Evangeline RFL, Teen LA RFL, and MS. LA RFL pageants at 2 p.m.
