Renovations begin in the AHS weight room
Ever since Ann Smith became a School Board Representative about a year ago, she has worked to help Amite High School find a way to obtain a much needed larger weight room.
"We chose to wait to start the weight room renovations after football season so that the athletes would not be inconvenienced," said Smith.
Currently, the weight room is in the dressing/locker room in the old bandroom which is now a field house serving also as a weight room. Now, the band and choral music room is located in the new auditorium.
Renovations have begun to transform the concession stand building into a large weight room removing a wall, refurbishing the restrooms within the building, and work will include repairs and repainting. The renovation project will include ceiling repairs and new flooring. There will be enough room to keep the current game-plan room, but after the wall removal, there weight room area will be a separate, large L shaped room with large south-facing windows and a series of smaller high placed north facing windows.
"It's a blessing for the students to look forward to something new," said Coach Alden Foster, AHS Headcoach. "The new weight room renovation will be completed this July."
"We are excited about the renovations to the weight room starting," said Superintendent Kolwe. "I'm sure the community will be pleased with it when it is completed."
"Amite has a lot of kids who go on to play college football. I'm glad we will have a facility similar to what they'll have available in college," said Coach Foster. "Amite has a top notch football program, and the weight room is going to be a top notch facility. I'm really glad Mrs. Smith has been pushing to make this a reality. This project has been a dream for this high school for many years."
