Residential fire claims four lives in Rayne

RAYNE - It has been a tragic weekend in Rayne.

After the death of 35-year-old Stacy R. Forbes Friday night, a house fire Saturday night claimed the lives of four children.

The house fire took place at 11:59 p.m. in the 1500 block of Edith Street in Rayne.

The Rayne police and fire departments responded to the call, and discovered the bodies of four deceased children inside the building upon arriving.

Authorities later learned that the children's mother, Shaqueta McDade, 26, had left the children, ages two, five, seven and eight, unattended at home. McDade has been charged with four counts of negligent homicide as a result.

Also responding to the call and assisting in the investigation were the Acadia Parish coroner's office and Louisiana State Fire Marshall.
