Richland Schools showing academic growth
With school and district performance scores being released recently by the Louisiana Department of Education, one would be inclined to think that Richland Parish school scores were in decline.
However, since the Spring 2001 release date, Richland Parish Schools have seen an overall increase in growth by 4.0 points, School Superintendent Cathy Stockton noted.
“Overall, the school district increased scores over last years’s,” Stockton noted. “We did have Delhi High School as academically unacceptable. However, Delhi High School had a score of 59.”
This was only one point away from the leaving the academically unacceptable range, she pointed out, and Delhi had show more growth than any other school in the parish, improving 9.9 points since the last testing period.
Schools are assigned growth targets annually and Delhi High School, Holly Ridge Elementary and Rayville Junior High School met and exceeded their 2008 Growth Targets.
While technically, the state could take over school ranked at academically unacceptable, Stockton said this was unlikely in the case of DHS since the school was only one point away from being acceptable and had shown continued improvement.
“I would doubt very sincerely that the state would want to take over a school that has continued to improve over the last three year,” she said. “DHS met its growth target last year and will receive money for second year in a row.”
Stockton said she is proud of Delhi’s continued growth and is confident the school will continue to improve next year.
“We’re not going to stop working,” she said.
Growth labels are assigned to schools based on their improvements overall. Holly Ridge Elementary received the Growth Label of Exemplary Academic Growth. Rayville Junior High and Delhi High School were labeled as having Recognized Academic Growth. Each of these schools is eligible for monetary rewards based on their individual academic success.
Mangham High School, Start Elementary School, Mangham Junior High School, Mangham Elementary School, and Holly Ridge Elementary School were listed as Two Star Schools (scores 80.0-99.9). Rayville High School, Rayville Junior High School, Rayville Elementary School and Delhi Middle School are One Star School (scores 60.0-79.9). No Richland Parish Schools were listed in Subgroup Component Failure.
