Riverfield Raiders heading to playoffs

The Riverfield Raiders marched in the play-offs after a 26-17 victory over the Claibome Rebels.

The win lifted the Raiders to a 7-4 regular season record and marked the third straight year that Riverfield is headed to the post season. However, the game was not an easy one, as the Rebels put up a strong fight.

Claiborne opened the scoring of the first quarter after a 60 yard halfback pass play, which gave the Rebels first and goal. Cooper Suggs scored from 4 yards out to make it 7-0. Riverfield responded with a 63 yard drive of its own. Corbin Cater broke a run of 20 yards, and Brad Rogers added another 22 yard run to put the Raiders in scoring position. Jon Taylor Davis scored on a 6 yard touchdown run, and kicked the PAT. Raiders 7, Rebels 7.

The Raiders defense made the next big play of the game. Patrick Johnson intercepted a screen pass to give Riverfield the ball again at the Rebel 34 yard line. Riverfield scored a few plays later as Jon Taylor Davis dashed into the in zone for a 13 yard touchdown run behind the blocking of Joseph Bell, Reid Rocket, Zac Presley, Blake Branch and Logan Moore. Raiders 13, Rebels 7.

On its next possession, the Raider offense drove 80 yards for another score. The key play was a 32 yard pass from Corbin Cater to Dakota Moss. Brad Rogers scored on a one yard run. Raiders 20, Rebels 7.

The Raider defense continued to play well in the 1st half, keyed by the tackling of Jon Taylor Davis, Corbin Cater, Logan Moore and Patrick Johnson. The offense turned the ball over with an interception deep in Raider territory to give Claiborne the football at the 8 yard line. Cooper Suggs scored from there to tighten the score to 20-14 going into halftime.

In the 3rd quarter, Claiborne drove the ball down Riverfield’s throat to open the second half. The Rebels reached the 17 yard line before tackles by Joseph Bell and Logan Moore stopped the drive. Claiborne converted on a 34 yard field goal to close the gap to 20-17.

In the 4th quarter, things looked grim for Riverfield after an interception gave the Rebels possession at midfield. Claibome drove the ball near the goal after a 27 yard pass play. Suggs tried for his third TD of the night, but fumbled after being hit by Dakota Moss and Logan Moore. The ball bounced through the end zone, resulting in a touch back that gave the Raiders possession.

Riverfield made the most of the break. Jon Taylor Davis ripped of a run of 26 yards, and Brad Rogers broke lose on another 32 yard run. Corbin Carter also had some big runs on the 80 yard drive, finally taking it into the end zone from 1 yard out. Raiders 26, Rebels 17.

Brad Rogers sealed the victory with an interception on Claibome’s final possession. The Raiders rushed for 337 yards on the night. Rogers led Riverfield with 24 carries for 170 yards and 1 touchdown, giving him over 1100 yards on the season. Davis added 14 rushes for 105 yards and 2 touchdowns, and Cater added 7 rushes for 62 yards and 1 touchdown.

Riverfield will travel to Clarksdale Mississippi Friday to face the Lee Academy Colts. The Raiders are in the play-offs as a wild card team and Lee comes into the ball game with a 7-4 record and runner up in District 1AA. Come support the Raiders as they travel to Mississippi.
