Road to ‘end of the road’ getting smoother

Henderson – The I-10 interchange — or Henderson exit — is known as the “end of the road” in this community.

It’s where everybody here has to go for anything from eggs to gasoline. And now the two-mile stretch of state highway that connects Henderson to the “end of the road” is finally about to be resurfaced.

In a symbolic gesture, the newly elected legislative team of state Sen. Troy Hebert and Rep. Fred Mills Jr., along with Parish President Guy Cormier, presented Mayor Sherbin Collette with a ceremonial check for $1.7 million at the Town Council meeting Monday night (April 7).

Since La. 352, the Henderson Highway, belongs to the state, the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development will actually be handling the funds.

Speaking to a standing-room-only crowd, Sen. Hebert said that Henderson is the gateway to the “crown jewel,” the Atchafalaya Basin, and that improving La. 352 is one of the first projects that he and Rep. Mills brought home to St. Martin Parish.

Added to the agenda was Vincent Alexander, owner of the Creole Zydeco Club on Henderson Highway, who proposed to hold an outdoor concert featuring two bands on Friday, May 2, the same weekend as the Breaux Bridge Crawfish Festival. Alexander wanted to take advantage of a gap in the entertainment in Breaux Bridge by staying open until 2 a.m.

But Councilwoman Liz Robin explained to Alexander that according to the town’s noise ordinance, the outdoor concert would have to end by 10 p.m. After a brief discussion the council and mayor denied Alexander’s request to hold a outdoor concert.

In other business, the council:

•Agreed to allow the Shining Star after school program to use the recreation building for its summer program the first two weeks in June.

•Hired two officers, Alex Savoie and Benjamin Guillory, to replace the two officers who resigned from the force.

•Heard a report that the police department collected $43,225 in fines during the month of March.
