Robichaux named to All-Tourney team
LAFAYETTE – Former Notre Dame standout and current UL-Lafayette hurler Justin Robichaux and Scott Hawkins were rewarded for their performances in the Sun Belt Conference Championship with All-Tournament honors, thanks to votes from the tournament’s eight head coaches.
Robichaux, a junior, was outstanding in his start against No. 1 seed Middle Tennessee on Thursday, May 21. Despite allowing nine hits, he gave up just one run in seven innings, giving the Cajuns a head start which allowed them to fend off a late attack from the Blue Raiders in a 5-4 win that came down to the last play.
Robichaux played a large part in helping the Ragin Cajuns’ pitching staff to their fifth straight year at the front of the Sun Belt pitching standings, as the team maintained a 5.01 ERA. Robichaux was statistically the league’s best pitcher this year, finishing with a 1.98 ERA, a full point lower than any other pitcher. He allowed just 13 runs in 59 innings pitched, holding opposing batters to a .259 batting average.
Hawkins, a three-year letter winner entering the 2009 season and new all-time career home run leader for ULL, earned the recognition with strong hitting throughout the Cajuns’ four games in the tournament. He went 6-for-15 during that span with two home runs and six RBI, both team-leading statistics.
