CROWLEY – During the Crowley Rotary Club meeting held Tuesday, November 5 at the Town Club, J.W. Landry was awarded a Professional Award plaque for his service and dedication to both the club and the city of Crowley.

Elliot Dore, Rotary Foundation Chairperson for the last two years, gave an informative presentation on the background of the foundation and how members could become part of it.

This foundation’s purpose is to support the efforts of Rotary International to achieve world understanding and peace through international humanitarian, educational and cultural exchange programs.

Out of each Rotarian’s yearly membership dues, or (Every Rotarian, Every Year, or EREY) which are $100, fifty percent are given back to the club for scholarship and other such funds for each particular club.

Once a member has contributed to EREY, a person automatically becomes a Rotary Foundation Sustaining Member. By donating $1000 or more, a person becomes a Paul Harris Fellow, and receives a commemorative certificate, a pin and a medallion.

Through the Annual Programs Fund which every Rotarian contributes to, more than 160 countries have and continue to be helped, through such events as digging ditches to provide clean water and providing literacy skills to children in these countries, to name a few.

In 1985, the Polio Plus Project was adopted by Rotary clubs nationwide, and has since contributed to more than two billion children being vaccinated.

“Our goal is to eradicate polio in the next two to three years,” Dore continued.

The Crowley Rotary Club, over the past year has contributed nearly $400 to this cause.

“These projects enable our Rotarians to advance in their world understanding,” informed Dore.
