Running backs top Grid Stars list
CROWLEY – Despite a frustrating Week 5 for most of their teams, some of Acadia Parish’s running backs posted some impressive numbers last week.
Seven parish running backs, in fact, racked up at least 100 yards despite local teams going a combined 2-3 Friday night.
Rayne’s Jalen Williams wasn’t the leading rusher, but he did lead the Wolves to a dramatic come-from behind victory over South Beauregard.
Williams crossed the goal line three times on the night, twice in the fourth quarter, as the Wolves rallied from a 26-14 deficit to claim a 28-26 victory. He also scored Rayne’s first touchdown of the night on a 51-yard run.
His three touchdowns and 130 yards were more than enough to earn Williams the top spot on this week’s edition of Grid Stars.
William’s teammate, R.J. Buchanan also put on an impressive showing, rushing for 125 yards and one touchdown on just six carries. His touchdown scamper went for 61 yards.
Church Point’s Jacob Boone also scored three times, racking up 100 yards on 19 carries in the Bears’ 37-2 victory over Erath.
Also earning recognition this week are Notre Dame’s Luke Broussard, Crowley ’s Davante Bourque and Iota’s Brandon Fantroy and Thomas Murrell.
Broussard led the Pios’ ground attack, rushing for 202 yards on 23 carries in a 16-7 loss to Catholic High of New Iberia. He scored once on a 65-yard run in the third quarter.
Bourque provided the bulk of Crowley ’s offense in a 55-20 loss to Teurlings.
The senior tailback picked up 107 yards and one touchdown on 17 carries and hauled in two passes for 85 yards and a score. He also had a 21-yard kickoff return that gave him 213 all-purpose yards on the night.
Fantroy and Murrell combined for 254 yards and two touchdowns during Iota’s 18-14 loss at Oberlin.
Fantroy netted 148 yards and a touchdown on 28 carries while Murrell rushed 11 times for 106 yards and one score.
