The Sacred Heart girl’s basketball team rattled off back-to-back victories over Basile and Delcambre. The SHHS boys also got in on the winning action. They completed the sweep with a 34-27 victory over the Class 1A Panthers.

The Lady Trojans pulled a 56-50 win over the Lady Bearcats of Basile. It was a great game as the two teams fought hard all game. The two squads traded bucket for bucket for the first period. Neither team could grab the momentum. Sacred Heart got a great defensive performance from Kelsey Jagneaux and Sarah Fontenot, while Basile’s Allison Miller and Allie LeDoux led the defensive effort for the Cats. It was 11-11 when the first eight-minute stanza was over. Kinzey Franks paced the Lady Trojans with five points, including a triple-point bucket.

The second period was a mirror-image of the first period. Both squads put up good battles with neither team taking the momentum. Franks helped the Lady Trojans’ effort with seven points, including back-to-back three-point shots. She would end the game with an amazing 23 points. The Lady Trojans pulled out in front by a bucket and took a 25-23 lead into the locker room at the break.

The third period is where the Lady Trojans began to pull away. Despite eight points from Miller, the Lady Bearcats fell behind by six points. Fontenot and Franks played great on both sides of the ball for the Lady Trojans. They also each hit a three-point shot in the frame. Sacred Heart pulled out in front 39-33.

With the game still undecided, the two platoons traded buckets for the first three minutes of the final period. Basile got hot and picked up points from four different girls in the period. One thing that helped the Lady Trojans out in front was their free-throw shooting. Sacred Heart was five of eight at the line. That allowed them to keep the lead after Basile went to fouling. Elizabeth Ardoin finished the game with 10 points to help her team.

The Lady Trojans pounded out a 50-39 win over the Lady Panthers of Delcambre. The win didn’t come so easy as the Lady Trojans fell behind early. Missed shots and a strong push from the DHS defense forced Sacred Heart to fall behind 14-7 after the first frame, not to mention the trio of three-point shots from Delcambre’s Jenny Bouillon.

Sacred Heart slowly battled back in the second frame. They slowed the game down a lot and stiffened up on defense. They out shot the Lady Panthers 12-7 and inched their way to 21-19 deficit. A great defensive effort from Kelsey Jagneaux and Kelsie Enicke helped the local girls get back in the game.

The two-point deficit did not last long. The two teams battled hard for the first couple of minutes after the intermission. After that, the conditioning of the Lady Trojans got the better of the Lady Panthers. Sacred Heart quietly pulled out in front and took a lead they would never relinquish. Sarah Fontenot’s five points helped her team take a 33-31 lead when the dust settled and the third period was over.

The game was over for the Lady Panthers. They were never able to recover in the final frame. They fell by 11 points to the Lady Trojans after Sacred Heart out scored them 17-8 in the final eight minutes. Kinzey Franks paced the girls in blue and gold with 13 points, while Enicke was good for 10 points. Sarah Fontenot finished the game with nine points.

The Sacred Heart boys jumped out in front in the first period. Delcambre battled hard in the low-scoring period, but a pair of three-point shot from Daniel Aguillard put the Trojans out in front with a 10-8 lead after the first stanza.

The local boys out-scored their opponents 9-6 in the second stanza. Missed shots and good defense forced the low-scoring period. Caleb Fontenot pitched in with a three-point shot and Brock Viga hit four points. Viga would lead the Trojans with 14 points in the contest overall.

Sacred Heart took a 19-14 lead into the locker room. However, Delcambre battled back and nearly caught the boys in blue and gold in the third period. The Panthers out scored the Trojans 11-9 on some accurate shooting from Lance Linden who nailed own four points in the period. Sacred Heart saw their lead nearly go away as they were up just 26-25 after the third frame ended.

The two teams seemed to be out of gas at there were only eight points in the entire final frame. Sacred Heart held Delcambre to just two points, allowing them to regain a commanding lead and earn the 34-27 victory. Aguillard completed his night with 13 points.

Both Sacred Heart teams are currently competing in the Pine Prairie High School Invitational Tournament. (See complete story at bottom of page)
