The Sacred Heart High School basketball teams took to the road Tuesday night. They met the Bulldogs of Elizabeth High School in nearby Allen Parish.

The Trojan teams were gearing up for the Evangeline Parish Basketball Tournament, which began yesterday at the SHHS Gymnasium.

The Lady Trojans and the Lady Bulldogs got it on in the opening contest. From the onset, the Lady Trojans found themselves behind. They were out-scored 17-6 in the first frame. As the clock expired, it looked as if the home team was going to take the game and run with it.

However, the Lady Trojans would make a strong comeback. The swift shooting of Sarah Fontenot helped to put the local girls back on track to make a game of things. Fontenot ripped back-to-back three-point bombs. She would go on to finish the night with nine points. Her effort helped the SHHS girls keep pace with the home team and match them with 14 points. At the break, the Lady Trojans were down 20-31, but they managed to gain some very positive momentum.

The local girls slipped a little in the third period. Elizabeth slowed things down a bit and held Sacred Heart to just nine points, while putting up 12 points. The slower pace made it a 43-29 contest with only one eight-minute period left to go.

The final period saw the Lady Trojans out-score the Lady Bulldogs 15-11. It was the first time in the contest that happened. The rally came short, but it cut the deficit somewhat. The Lady Trojans fell 54-44 to the Lady Bulldogs. Kelsie Enicke led the Lady Trojans with 14 points, including back-to-back three-point shots in the final stanza.

The loss puts them at 3-2 on the year with the Lady Demons of Mamou High School waiting for them in the opening round of the Evangeline Parish Tournament.

The SHHS boys came into the game with Elizabeth looking for their first victory of the young season. They fought hard and it paid off as they beat the Bulldogs 63-46 in front of the EHS crowd. The win helped the boys in blue and gold improve to a 1-3 record with the Mamou Demons waiting for them in the first round of the Evangeline Parish Tournament.

Sacred Heart Jumped out to a 21-12 lead on some very good teamwork up and down the roster. The Bulldogs were overwhelmed by the dominating first period performance. Brock Vige was on fire all game and finished with 18 points to lead his team. He had a big fourth period with 10 points.

The Trojans slowed the game down a lot in the second period. They held the Bulldogs to just eight points and scored nine points. Nevertheless, the local boys still held the lead when they went into the locker room at the half. Sacred Heart’s 30-20 lead was good for the moment, but they were not satisfied at all.

The Trojans bolted out to another big lead in the third frame. They scored 16 points and cranked up some amazing defense. They held the host team to just four points, taking a commanding 46-24 lead after three complete frames. Daniel Aguillard began getting in on the action. After scoring five points in back-to-back periods, Aguillard went on to finish his day at the office with 14 points.

The Trojans held on to win the contest and improve their record. Look for the Trojans to make a strong run in the Evangeline Parish Tournament if they can get past a very strong Mamou team in the first round.
