Sales Tax collection down

Some businesses in Vermilion Parish deferred paying their sales tax in September because of two hurricanes, making sales collection fall by as much as 18 percent.

The School Board, Police Jury and the Sheriff Department all seen a decline in Sales Tax collection by 18 percent, because of the deferred sales tax collections.

The town of Erath collected 20 percent less or about $5,000 less. Maurice was down 19 percent or $8,000 less.

Abbevlle, on the other hand, had a slight decrease (one percent, or $4,000).

The news was not all bad.

Because residents had to stay in hotels and motels in the parish, sales tax collection was up 60 percent from a year ago. The tourist commission collected $19,000 compared to $12,000 a year ago.

Delcambre and Kaplan had an increase in collection, Kaplan collected $4,000 more or nine percent, while Delcambre collected $4,200 or 26 percent more.
