Saving a child's life

James Hoffpauir, who wants to save lives when he graduates from college, got a taste of what saving a life is about earlier this month in Galveston.

Hoffpauir was on vacation in Galveston, Texas and swimming on the beach with friends. He began walking to deeper waters when he heard a tiny voice yelling for help.

He looked around and saw a seven-year old boy going underwater as the waves pounded the surf.

Hoffpauir, a 2006 North Vermilion graduate, first thought the boy was faking it but then realized he was not and quickly rushed to his aid.

He got there in time and grabbed the boy from the water and hauled him back to land.

“It was an overwhelming experience,” Hoffpauir told the Abbeville Kiwanians. “The feeling I got in my stomach was just unbelievable.”

What made it even more amazing was that Hoffpauir and his friends were not supposed to be at the beach at that time. They should have been gone but because they got there later than expected, they stayed longer.

“God put us in the right place at the right time.”

One thing that struck Hoffpauir and his friends about the whole ordeal was that there was no parent around watching the child. When he brought him back to shore and stayed with him for a while, no parent came to the aid of the child.

Hoffpauir is beginning his third year at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette where he is majoring in nursing. He plans to work one year in nursing after graduation and then go back to school to become a nurse practitioner.

“I guess I never realized how great it really felt to save someone’s else’s life,” said Hoffpauir. “This experience just reiterated the fact that I am on the right track in my plans . I definitely want to have a career that will allow me to save lives on a daily basis.”
