School Board fills key staff positions

Breaux Bridge – Several key staff and administrative positions were filled during the St. Martin School Board’s monthly meeting last week.

The openings included the newly created position of director of administration and operations of schools, principalships at Breaux Bridge Elementary and Breaux Bridge High schools, and Title 1 math supervisor.

The appointments included Ronald LeBlanc, director of administration; Malcolm Calais, math supervisor; Kara L. Meaux, BBHS principal; and Katrina Williams, BBE principal.

Responsibilities of the new director position include serving as a resource person to staff, principals, teachers and the community; assisting in fostering professional growth and building of staff morale; assisting in the determination of types of programs needed by the schools; keeping abreast of governmental statutes, regulations and rules relating to board operations; supervise the management of the maintenance and transportation supervisors and administration of schools; review and monitor the preparation of all budgets falling within the area of maintenance and supervision.

LeBlanc is a native of Breaux Bridge who is currently the principal of Scott Middle School. He earned degrees in education and administration from UL-Lafayette and LSU. He began his education career as a teacher at Parks Elementary in 1973 and later taught at Breaux Bridge Elementary. He worked for eight years at Red Fox Machine & Supply as a sales representative before returning to the education profession in 1985 at Crowley Middle School. He was named assistant principal at Scott Middle in 1991 and promoted to principal in 1995.

Malcolm Calais is a veteran parish educator who has served as substitute math supervisor for the past 15 months. In addition to teaching assignments in Cecilia and Breaux Bridge schools beginning in 1961, he previously served as Title 1 math supervisor, director of federal programs/Follow Through and principal at Cecilia High School.

Kara L. Meaux has worked as assistant principal at BBHS since 2004. A Breaux Bridge native, she holds degrees in education, supervision and administration from UL-Lafayette. She began her teaching career at Parks Primary in 1993 and moved on to Parks Middle in 2000, where she taught math and served as reading/math facilitator until her appointment at BBHS.

She was named the St. Martin Parish Teacher of the year in 2002 and earned academic honors while working on her masters degree at ULL in 2003.

Katrina Williams is a native of New Orleans who came to Acadiana as an evacuee from Hurricane Katrina in 2005 when she was hired as a teacher and technology coordinator at BBE.

She earned her BA degree in education and psychology at Vassar College in New York and her MA in administration and supervisor at the University of Michigan.

She began her career as an elementary school teacher in New Orleans in 1979 and held various positions there until the storm.
