School board holds special meeting
The Board passed a motion to authorize the superintendent to engage the services of Dr. David K Lerch for the purpose of preparing and submitting a magnet assistance grant from the United States Department of Education on behalf of the Tangipahoa Parish School System.
The Board approved the purchase of a copier for Chesbrough Elementary School in the amount of $5,965.92 to be paid from Pay-As-You-Go Funds.
Also, the Board approved Robert Potts' request that any money left over from the bond fund be used for the completion of the girls' softball field at Sumner High School at a cost of roughly $43,000.
A private tenure hearing for Earl Richardson Jr. took place after the room was cleared out except for the entire School Board, superintendent, and lawyers.
The superintendent's recommendation for termination was voted on and with a 5 - 4 vote.
"Recommendations such as this are not pleasant, but it is something we need to do to keep in mind that we're dealing with the safety and well-being of our students," Mark Kolwe, Superintendent said. "I appreciate the majority of the Board supporting my recommendation to terminate this individual."
"I'm not at liberty to discuss those specific charges. The Board found the employee to be guilty of the charges and voted to terminate his employment that's all public record. The specifics of the charges are not public record, though, so I can't go into any of those specifics," said Bob Hammonds, Special Counsel to the Tangipahoa School Board. "Bus drivers in Louisiana if they work more than three years, they get tenured just like teachers so, and so if you take any disciplinary action at all, no matter what it is, and if the bus driver who is tenured, you have to have a hearing before the Board to do so. The Superintendent brought charges against this particular employee who is tenured and the Board found him guilty of the charges brought by the superintendent and voted to terminate his employment based on the charges based on the superintendent's recommendation.
The Personnel Committee report the addendum to the Board was approved and Mary Stilley was granted an administrative transfer/reclassfication from Assistant Principal of Champ Cooper to Acting Principal of D.C. Reeves.
