CROWLEY - The May meeting of the Acadia Parish School Board welcomed a host of students from throughout the parish. The winners of the Young Author’s Contest, the Rayne High School Boys wrestling teams as well as the Crowley High School Girls power lifting team were each presented to the board members and recognized for their various accomplishments.
The Board unanimously supported Superintendent Bourque’s recommendation to hire Marlene Courville as the principal at Branch Elementary School and Neal Young for the principal’s position at Egan Elementary.
Several construction projects were considered and approved including new classrooms at Mire Elementary, with the lowest bid received from Fruge Lumber at $249,900, Evangeline Elementary with a winning bid of $502,232.69 from Magellan Construction and a $294,000 classroom addition at Branch Elementary being handled by E.L. Habetz.
The board considered and approved an adjustment in prices of school lunch to begin next year. Only those families who pay full price for lunches will see the 30¢ a day increase for elementary and middle school students and a 45¢ a day increase for high schools. Board member Doug LaCombe and Milton Simar, both disagreed and voted against the increase in prices. LaCombe explained that “every nickel counts these days in the family budget and I simply can’t support this.” The increase in school lunches would amount to around $60 a year per student.
In June professional employees can expect a $700 supplement while support staff will be given $500.
The board was pleased to announce that it will be able to supply school supplies for students in pre-k through fourth grade. These much needed supplies cost just under $200, 000 a year and is funded through federal dollars. The board will meet again June 6, 2010.
