School Board meets today

Breaux Bridge – Members of the St. Martin School Board will face another lengthy agenda when they convene for their July meeting today (Wednesday) at 5 p.m. at the Instructional Center, 111 Courville Street here.

Of special interest to the system’s approximately 1,000 employees is an item to authorize the disbursement of a July sales tax supplement in the amount of $450 for all professional employees and $365 for paraprofessionals.

Along with a number of routine matters, today’s agenda also includes:

•An executive (secret) session to discuss a lawsuit filed against the board by Sandra Batiste and to discuss personnel issues, including employee conduct and performance.

•Board members have placed a number of items on the agenda.

Board president James Blanchard wants to consider changes in board policy dealing with employment contracts and compensation;

Member Floyd Knott plans to discuss parliamentary procedures and the board’s two sales taxes;

Board member Rodney Ledoux wants to discuss sales tax supplements, the hiring procedure that involves testing, and the JROTC program at Breaux Bridge High School;

Board member Wanda Babin wants to change the part-time secretary at St. Martinville Jr. High to full time, and to construct a football field and baseball diamond at St. Martinville Jr. High.

•Consider the hiring of 10 additional teachers.

•Consider finance committee recommendations regarding a memorandum of understanding between the board and the Louisiana Technical College, Evangeline Campus, for the 2008-09 school year; and operation of a barber board/hairstyling class at the St. Martin Government Technology Center in Cecilia for the 2009 spring semester.

•Consider student accident and catastrophic insurance for 2008-09.

•Consider bid recommendations for electrical upgrades of the computer labs at the three high schools; re-roofing of buildings on the JCEP campus; and for bread products.

•Consider renewal of service contracts with Poché Prouet and Associates.

•Consider advertising for bids on alligator tags.

•Under personnel changes, consider appointment of an assistant principal at Breaux Bridge High; advertisement for principal of Breaux Bridge Jr. High; and advertisement for a PC technician.

•Consider revisions to the board’s sick leave policy.

•Consider request for waiver of sales tax penalties for Halliburton Energy Services.
