School Board names new elementary school

Vermilion Parish’s newest school will be named “LeBlanc Elementary” after long-time school board member Ulysses LeBlanc from Erath.

LeBlanc was the president of the school board from 1933 until he retired in 1954.

The School Board voted 5-2 to name the elementary school LeBlanc Elementary. The board elected to name it after a person instead of North Road Elementary, which was the second choice.

The school will be located north of Erath and will house pre-k through fifth graders. Students who live north of Erath, east of Abbeville and some in the Maurice area are expected to attend the new school.

The School Board has no time-table as to when the new elementary school will be built, but architectural plans are being drawn for it. The School Board is waiting for FEMA to give the School Board $13 million which will be used to help pay for the construction of the school.

Before the vote, Charles Toups, a LeBlanc community resident, encourged the school boards to vote for the name “LeBlanc Elementary” because there was once a LeBlanc Elementary in the LeBlanc Community (north of Erath).

He brought the old plaque that was on the LeBlanc school to school board meeting and showed the board members.

Not every school board member was in favor of the Leblanc name. School board members Anthony Fontana and Angela Faulk voted against the name.

Board member Charles Campbell abstained from voting.

Fontana said the new school is not located in the LeBlanc Community and students who will attend the school are from throughout the parish, not just Erath.

“It’s best to have a non-descript name to represent all three areas,” Fontana said.

Erath School Board member Ricky Broussard said the school is not being named after the LeBlanc Community but Ulysses LeBlanc .

“The name came up because of all the man did for the entire parish,” Broussard said. “It is not for the LeBlanc community. This is supporting Ulysses LeBlanc for all he did for the parish community as a whole.”
