Scott Angelle is the governor’s lobbyist

BATON ROUGE – Former St. Martin Parish President Scott Angelle has accepted a job as “the governor’s lobbyist,” it was announced Wednesday.

Angelle, a Democrat retained as state Natural Resources Secretary by Republican Gov. Bobby Jindal, will stay on at DNR in addition to his new legislative liaison post.

He will assume the position vacated by Tommy Williams last summer during the controversy over legislative pay raises.

“I was humbled by the confidence (the administration) would place in me,” Angelle told reporters.

The position has been vacant since Tommy Williams resigned last summer.

“Scott has a lot of horsepower,” said Jindal’s chief of staff Timmy Teepell. “He’s smart, talented and a tremendously hard worker.”

Angelle will work closely with Teepell and other top aides in dealing with the Legislature.

“What he is, is the governor’s lobbyist,” said state Sen. Troy Hebert,. D-Jeanerette.

“It’s a tremendously powerful position,” Hebert said.

A Breaux Bridge resident hasn’t had that much influence in Baton Rouge since the late Bob Angelle, a distant relative, was House speaker in Earl Long’s time, said state Rep. Fred Mills, D-Breaux Bridge.

As secretary of DNR, Angelle oversees state projects in the Atchafalaya Basin.

Angelle said he will meet with his staff at DNR in the mornings before heading over to the Capitol for his liaison work once the session convenes in April.

“I’ll sleep less and work more,” he said.

He commutes from Breaux Bridge rather than uproot his wife and children.

Angelle, who is paid $129,210 a year, will not receive additional compensation for his new duties, Teepell said.
