Second Annual Home Brew Competition at Roberts Cove Germanfest announced
ROBERTS COVE – The Roberts Cove Germanfest Association is sponsoring its second Home Brew Competition for this year’s festival, set for Oct. 5-6.
The association is asking that all beer homebrewers send two bottles of each of their favorite German-style beers, made by them, to be judged by the certified judges that will be on hand for the event.
The event is sanctioned by the American Homebrew Association (AHA) and will follow the rules of AHA for such events.
The entry fee for the first beer submission is $8, for which the entrant will receive a free entry pass to the festival. All additional beers entered are $5 each. The deadline for submission is Sept. 16, 2013, and entries should be sent or delivered to the competition chairman, Lawrence Cramer, 103 N. Avenue F in Crowley.
Entries can come from any of the 20 German beer categories as established by the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP). Medals will be awarded for scores of 25 or higher for the beer styles. The scoring is as follows: “Very Good,” 25-29, bronze; “Excellent,” 30-37, silver; and “Outstanding,” 38-50, gold.
According to Cramer, the results of the competition include feedback from the judges as to possible improvements to the beers, which comments are generally welcomed and very informative.
In addition, the homebrewers are also invited to provide 2.5- to 5-gallon kegs of their German beers for sampling by the people attending the festival. Voting by festival goers will take place and the brewer with the top score will be awarded the “People’s Choice Award” of $100 and a special plaque.
