The Class 2A Sportswriters All-State team was released earlier in the week. After all the sparks and explosion in Evangeline Parish, there were three local basketball players selected. Ville Platte High placed two members on the boy’s All-State team and Pine Prairie placed one of its girls on the team.
Chelsea West, a senior at PPHS, was named to the LSWA Class 2A All-State second team. West led both the first and second team with a 24-point-per-game average. West was an easy choice for the MVP of District 6-2A team.
One of the highest scoring basketball players in the state, Ville Platte’s Ralensee Nelson, was named to the LSWA Class 2A first team. The junior had an average of 23.7 points per game. Nelson was selected as the MVP of District 6-2A. Only a junior, Nelson is expected to return the Bulldogs next season in a quest to get the VPHS boys back to the Cajun Dome. Nelson helped the Dogs make back-to-back trips to the Top 28 and the quarter-finals this year.
Senior VPHS Bulldog Jovan Freeman received on Honorable Mention on the All-State team. Freeman has been a big part of the VPHS boy’s basketball success for the last four years. A leader on defense and offense, Freeman’s shoes will be hard for the Bulldogs to fill next year.
A special congratulations go out to all three members of Evangeline Parish for their hard work on the court and the accolades they received.
The Academic All-State team was also selected recently. Senior student-athletes had to maintain at least a 3.0 and be nominated by their coach and/or principal. They also have to be an all-district selection. Several players from Evangeline Parish were selected.
On the boys Academic All-State team, Derek Fontenot of Sacred Heart was chosen as a guard with a 4.0 grade point average (GPA).
Five players received an Honorable Mention. Sacred Heart’s Zack Ardoin and Spencer Bordelon, Mamou’s Denzel Frank and Kenneth Toussaint and Pine Prairie’s Tramon Bradley each received an HM.
On the girl’s team, Sacred Heart’s Anne Marie Fontenot was selected on the Composite team. This is a team composed of girls from all seven classes. A guard, Fontenot carries a 4.0 GPA.
Joining her on the Class 2A team are teammates Lyndi Vidrine and Lauren Parrott. Vidrine, a forward, carries a .396 GPA. Parrott, also a forward, carries a GPA of 3.89. Mamou’s Hali Moullier was selected as a forward with a GPA of 3.95.
Several ladies from Evangeline Parish earned Honorable Mention. Mamou’s Lauren Bertrand, Sadie Fontenot and Courtney Tate and Pine Prairie’s Kayla Johnson each received an HM.
All of these athletes showed they have what it takes to compete on the court and still excel in the classroom.
