Sewer maintenance occurring in Mamou, watch for smoke

MAMOU - A major sewer system repair and rehabilitation project in the Town of Mamou is now underway.

Eunice contractor Construction Pro Inc. began work the week of February 2, on the project being funded largely through grant funds from the Louisiana Community Development Block Grant (L.C.D.B.G.) program.

Smoke testing of sewer lines to detect leaks in the system was scheduled to begin February 4, and continue intermittently throughout the course of the project; which is expected to be ongoing for approximately eight months.

As a result of the testing, residents can occasionally expect to see smoke rising from sewer lines and hole covers in the areas being tested. Residents may also see smoke on their own properties and are reminded to not be alarmed if smoke is seen rising from their exterior property areas (yards) and/or interior plumbing fixtures. Project engineers indicate the smoke is non-toxic.

Sewer system leaks revealed by the smoke testing will be repaired by contractors during the course of the project.

If the smoke testing reveals leaks on private properties, residents are directed to contact an area plumber to make the necessary repairs.

Questions concerning the project may be directed to the Town of Mamou Wastewater Treatment System at 468-3861 or Mamou Town Hall at 468-3272.
