Shining Moment proves best in the $75,000 Opelousas Stakes
Opelousas – Shining Moment ($6.20), ridden by Colby Hernandez, edged clear from early rival Shutupanddance in mid-stretch before drawing clear under intermittent urging to a 1 ½ length victory in the $75,000 Opelousas Stakes for two-year-old fillies at Evangeline Downs Racetrack and Casino on Saturday evening.
Bred and owned in Florida by the Padua Stables and trained by Steve Asmussen, Shining Moment covered the six furlongs in 1:12 3/5 over a track labeled fast. The win was the third and second stakes score in just five career starts for the chestnut Yes It’s True filly. Out of the Meadowlake mare Shimmering Night, Shining Moment earned $45,000 for the win, and increased her earnings to $98,380.
Humble Storm Kathy, part of the Denise and Bill Morrison owned entry that was the lukewarm 2-1 favorite in the wagering, rallied boldly in the stretch to finish second, two lengths in front of her stablemate, Shutupandance. Reckon was six lengths further back in fourth, followed by Doc of the Bay, Tensas Cool Town, and Worldly Broad.
