Shop Rite/Tobacco Plus raise funds for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital

The Shop Rite/Tobacco Plus Groupdonated proceeds from their fundraising efforts to support the work in pediatric care being done at St. Jude’s Research Hospital in Memphis,Tenn.  Representatives from the company made the $124,000 donation to representatives from St. Jude’s at the Shop Rite location in Lafayette on Wednesday, Oct. 28 at noon

The funds were raised through a number of charitable events held at Shop Rite/Tobacco Plus Group’s locations throughout South Louisiana.  The main source of the funding came from a springtime golf tournament at Bayou Bend Golf Course, but the chain also held in-store special events like hot dog and hamburger sales, dunking booths and customer appreciation days.

“For years we have supported St. Jude and involved employees and customers through purchase-with-purchase and percentage-of-sale campaigns and event and program sponsorships,” says Shop Rite/Tobacco Plus Group Owner John Dan Gielen. “We are pleased with the support our vendors, employees and customers showed in helping a facility that has given so much hope to children facing cancer and other catastrophic diseases.”

St. Jude’s Research Hospital is the second-largest healthcare charity in the United States.  Many physicians from around the country send some of their most critically ill patients and most challenging cases there for treatment.  One of the things that sets St. Jude’s apart is that all patients accepted for treatment are treated without regard to a family’s ability to pay.

From an annual operating budget of approximately $1 million in 1962 to an operating cost of more than $1.4 million per day, St. Jude relies on its volunteers and donors to continue to meet the needs of its scientists and doctors to conduct the groundbreaking research and develop the lifesaving treatments. St. Jude partners with organizations like the Shop Rite/Tobacco Plus Group that have been successful locally as a result of dedicated supporters like John Dan Gielen and his company.

The Shop Rite/Tobacco Plus Group is the largest independently owned convenience store chain in Louisiana, offering fuel, food, payday loans, home supplies and convenience items to customers.  Their 59 locations range from Cutoff to Many to Vinton in Southwest Louisiana.
