Sister Brendan Pizzalato, O. Carm.
Sister Brendan Pizzalato, O. Carm., a Sister of Mount Carmel died November 5, 2009 at Eastridge Nursing Home in Abbeville, LA. She was 80 years old, and in the 55th year of her religious profession.
Sister Brendan was born Shirley Mary Pizzalato on Dec. 12, 1928 in New Orleans, LA, to Joseph Pizzalato of Contessa, LA and Eunice Kramer Pizzalato of Lockport, LA. She entered the Congregation of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Sept. 1, 1951. She pronounced temporary vows on Aug. 3, 1954 and perpetual vows on Aug. 1, 1957.
Sister Brendan attended Our Lady of Prompt Succor Grammar School and graduated from Westwego High School in Westwego, LA. She received her teaching certificate from Mount Carmel Normal School and also attended Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in New Orleans.
Sister Brendan taught at Mount Carmel schools in Westwego, Abbeville, Rayne, and Lafayette and New Orleans, LA. During the years that followed, she lived at the Mount Carmel Motherhouse in New Orleans where she dedicated her time working in the Altar Bread Department. From Dec. 1999 to Aug. 2005, Sister Brendan was a resident of Our Lady of Wisdom Healthcare Center in Algiers. Following Hurricane Katrina she lived at the Golden Age of Welsh and in 2008 she moved to Eastridge Nursing Home in Abbeville, LA.
Sister Brendan was preceded in death by her parents and her three sisters, Mrs. George (Mary Ann) Severns, TX, Mrs. Jackson (Ruth) Dantin and Mrs. Betty Verdin. She is survived by her sister, Mrs. Larry (Brenda) Keller, Houston, TX.
Visitation will be at the Sisters of Mount Carmel Motherhouse Chapel, 420 Robert E. Lee Blvd, New Orleans on Nov. 9, 2009 from 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. with rosary at 10:00 a.m. with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. followed by interment in St. Louis No. 3 Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to Jacob Schoen and Son, Inc.
