SLCC-Acadian Campus begins college courses

LAFAYETTE – Students at South Louisiana Community College can get started on an associate’s degree right in their hometown. For the first time, students are taking general education courses at SLCC’s campuses in Crowley, Opelousas, and Abbeville starting today.

Those campuses, along with campuses in St. Martinville, New Iberia, and Ville Platte, provide a variety of technical programs.

“Because we are now a comprehensive community college, we have the ability to offer a range of credentials to our students,” said Dr. Natalie Harder, SLCC chancellor. “As demand dictates, we’ll offer more general education courses each semester.”

The college is using distance-learning technology for many of the courses. This means students in Crowley taking Algebra are in a class with students in Lafayette via a video conferencing system. Students in Abbeville are studying accounting with students in New Iberia, and students in New Iberia are learning about computers with students in Lafayette.

At SLCC’s T.H. Harris campus, students are taking English and physical science on campus in Opelousas.

“These are the first of hopefully many more general education courses for all of SLCC’s campuses,” said Harder.

Other changes happening this semester include an expansion of the college’s HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) program to its Gulf Area campus in Abbeville, and the addition of food service at its T.H. Harris campus.

Also at the T.H. Harris campus, the Non-Destructive Testing program is now a one-year program.

“We’ve made some curriculum changes that help students get through the program quicker,” said Laurie Fontenot, campus dean at T.H. Harris. “Students enrolled this fall could be done by next summer.”

SLCC’s NDT program is the only accredited program in the state. Graduates are technicians that conduct inspections in a variety of industries such as oil and gas, aviation, and aeronautics. New students can enroll each semester.

Late registration for the Fall semester will continue this week. A mini session will begin Monday, Sept. 9.
