Sonnier family reunion held in Rayne
The 2009 Sonnier/Saulnier du Monde Family Association Reunion was held Saturday, June 20, at the Rayne Civic Center.
The Sonnier/Saulnier du Monde Family Association was organized in late September of 1998 to plan a reunion as part of the Congres Mondial Acadien-Louisiane of 1999. Officers were selected and they began working on a constitution. The constitution was adopted and the association was incorporated in December of 1998 after two meetings of the general membership.
Much planning by the members and officers took place each month as executive and general meetings were held to work out the many details required of such a grand undertaking. The cooperation of all involved was outstanding and resulted in a wonderful party for the cousins.
The 2009 reunion was a grand event, the third one of its kind as announced by president Patricia A. Sonnier, and her committee of vice president Annette Sonnier, secretary Kathy Sonnier Mier, treasurer Louise Sonnier, and genealogists Herman and Mary Alice Touchet.
Registration was overseen by Annette Sonnier, food by Preston Sonnier and his crew, cultural committee headed by Kathy Mier and Burnie Smith, while Ella Sonnier and Lorraine Simoneaux spearheaded the raffle and door prizes.
A special Mass was offered by Rev. Fr. Michael Guidry, with special remembrance for the departed family members and those serving their country in the military. Music was provided by David Simoneaux.
Grace before lunch was provided by Br. Jim Saylor, Elijah’s Fatherine Ministries.
Awards, raffle prizes and door prizes were awarded to a number of descendants in attendance, who also enjoyed a number of cultural and genealogical displays.
Serving as master of ceremonies was Gerald Domingue.
