Sonnier Reunion set for Sunday, August 31
Joachin and Olite Sonnier
The Sonnier Family Reunion will be held Sunday August 31, 2008 from 9:30 a.m.- 6:00 p.m. in the Lake Arthur Community Center in Lake Arthur. The reunion is held every two years and is a big production.
The reunion is held for all of the children of Joachin and Olite Sonnier, who were residents of Lake Arthur and well known in the community. The couple had 15 children with four sets of twins consecutively.
Joachin and Olite have passed on but the spirit of their lives live on through their children (15), grandchildren (41), great grandchildren (89), and great great grand children (32).
In 2006 the Sonniers began having the reunions themed. This year’s theme is Mardi Gras. Each family is to make a Mardi Gras shoebox float. Lakeside Flowers will be the judges for best of show.
Each family is to have a King and Queen to represent their family. A Mardi Gras Parade with all the King and Queens will be held and then will be crowned.
The reunion has what is called JOSFRA (Joachin and Olite Sonnier Family Reunion Association) Family Projects, which requires individual families to get together and do a fundraiser project.
In 2006, a family cookbook called “What’s Cooking Mama?” was made. In 2004, family address books were made. New for this year is a family Photo CD and Album. The reunion also has live auctions as part of their fundraisers.
Musical guest during lunch is Jacob Landry, and a live French Band will entertain at the end of the reunion by local Lake Arthur resident August Broussard.
Each reunion year, the Sonniers honor someone in their family. This year, two honorees and their family will do a video presentation.
A Memorial Table, which displays pictures of family members who have died, will be featured. Candles can be lit for them too.
The Sonniers invest in a Humanitarian Project, where they give back to an organization, family, or other on behalf of JOSFRA. In 2006, they cemented gravesites of family members where there was no marker.
Games, food, fun, and much more will be included this year. For more information, contact Lake Arthur’s Curtis Sonnier.
