Sonoma Cat earns win in the Oak Hall Stakes at Evangeline Downs
Opelousas – Sonoma Cat ($4.80), a well bred son of Storm Cat coming off an allowance victory at Churchill Downs in his last start recorded the first stakes win of his career in the $60,000 Oak Hall Stakes at Evangeline Downs Racetrack & Casino on Saturday evening. Jockey Randall Toups was able to settle the four-year-old colt just behind the early pacesetters Missed the Prom and Gowden Mile while those two dueled thru sharp early fractions of 22 1/5 & 44 4/5, then eased him to the outside at the top of the stretch and after responding to strong urging he edged past a game Missed the Prom in the final 50 yards for the victory. The winning margin was 3/4‘s of a length and the running time for the seven furlongs was 1:22.56, which was just .13 off the track record on a track labeled fast.
Trained by Steve Asmussen and owned by Jess Jackson’s Stonestreet Stable LLC, Sonoma Cat earned $36,000 for the win, the third in his eight race career and pushed his lifetime earnings past the $127,000 mark. Bred in Kentucky by the Racehorse Management, LLC, Sonoma Cat is out of the A. P. Indy mare She’s a Winner.
Missed the Prom, a stakes winner during the opening month of the meet at Evangeline, couldn’t hold off the winner in the final stages but was clearly second best. State Power checked in third, followed by Gowden Mile, Chief Gone West, and Cozy Time.
Greeley’s Conquest, the 5/2 morning-line favorite off a come-from-behind victory in the Temperance Hill Stakes at Louisiana Downs in his last start, was a late scratch.
