Spell charged in Marshal's Office theft
CROWLEY - At the request of the Crowley City Marshal, Crowley Police have conducted an investigation into missing funds from the office of the City Marshal.
“The City Marshal met with me regarding his belief of funds being taken from his office,” stated Crowley Chief of Police K.P. Gibson. “We discussed his concerns and immediately opened an investigation into the matter.”
The investigation revealed that over a six month period, funds from a checking account through the City Marshal’s Office were taken. Investigators began an investigation and revealed that the Marshal’s assistant had taken funds from the account for personal use.
The City Marshal provided our department with all financial statements and checks from the account to support our investigation.” said Chief Gibson. “Once we confirm the funds were utilized in a criminal manner, we issued an arrest warrant for one aggravated charge of felony theft. The amount of the theft was over $10,000.”
Emily Spell, 35, of Crowley was charged with Felony Theft. Spell was booked into the Acadia Parish Jail Monday afternoon. Spell has been on leave from the City Marshal’s Office since the investigation began.
“Marshal Deville has followed all the procedures required by law,” said Gibson. “He has notified the proper governmental agencies including the Mayor, the Legislative Auditor, the Attorney General and the District Attorney’s Office.”
