Church Point tops McMain in Class 3A playoffs
CHURCH POINT – In a game of contrasting offenses, the No. 9 Church Point Bears ran to a 65-44 first round win over No. 24 Eleanor McMain Friday night.
The Bears will now face No. 25 Donaldsonville (5-6) as the Tigers grabbed a 33-21 upset over No. 8 South Beauregard (7-4).
Church Point rolled up 460 yards on the ground, while McMain had 477 yards through the air.
The Bears put the first points on the board when Deion Monroe raced 65 yards to the end zone on the opening series of the game to take a 6-0 lead.
Monroe added touchdown runs of 8 yards and 1 yard to finish with 110 yards on 13 carries.
James Bellard was the other running threat for the Bears as he gained 201 yards on 11 carries, including a 60-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.
McMain senior quarterback Omari Jones, who entered the playoffs with 2,666 passing yards and 40 touchdowns, continued his air attack with five touchdown passes on the night.
Jones completed 32-of-48 passes for nearly 500 yards in the game with Darnell Williams hauling in 10 catches for 195 yards to finish with 1,158 yards on the season.
Church Point trailed 16-12 after the first quarter before exploding for sixstraight touchdowns to take a 53-16 advantage.
Brett Richard (2-82) scored on a 73-yard run while Trevor Breaux (3 yards), Christian Veronie (2 yards), Jake Morvant (1 yard), Jacob Bergeron (3 yards), Frederick Williams (60-yard kickoff return) all scored for the Bears.
McMain score four times in the game’s final seven minutes including a 34-yard pass from Jones to Williams on the game’s final play to close the gap to 21 points.
