DeRidder pulls away from Lady Pios
MOSS BLUFF – When they needed it the most, the Notre Dame Lady Pios failed to convert and it proved costly Friday in their first game of the Sam Houston Tournament.
After a hot start, the Lady Pios couldn’t find an offensive rhythm in the second half and went scoreless in the final two minutes of the fourth quarter, allowing Class 4A DeRidder to slip away with a 45-38 victory.
“That was a great game; we just didn’t win,” said Notre Dame coach Nolan Theriot, whose squad fell to 5-2 on the season with the loss. “We couldn’t buy a bucket in the crucial moments and we couldn’t take the lead when we were right there.”
The Lady Pios tied the game on three occasions in the final quarter, the final time on a free throw from Gabbie Romero with 2:16 remaining.
But the Lady Pios missed their final three shots after that and turned the ball over twice in the final minute enabling the Lady Dragons to post the final seven points of the game.
“They (DeRidder) took us out of running some of our offensive stuff, but I thought we held our own against a pretty good 4A team,” said Theriot. “We just can’t simulate in practice what they did; they just bodied us up and took us out of it.”
The Lady Pios got off to a quick start in the first quarter despite a number of turnovers.
Sam Lyons, Gabbie Romero and Alex Miller each drained 3-pointers in the first frame and the Lady Pios took a 17-11 advantage.
“You know, we scored 17 in the first quarter and look at how many balls we threw away; we could have had 25 (points),” said Theriot. “That’s where you have to put teams away and we could have had maybe a 12-point lead at half.”
That wasn’t the case , however.
The Lady Dragons cut the lead to 26-21 at the break and then went on an 11-4 run in the third quarter to take their first lead of the game at 32-30.
“Luckily we had a lead at the half,” said Theriot. “But as much of a turnaround as it was in the third, it really wasn’t that big of a deal going into the fourth quarter. I knew it was going to come down to who had the rock and I was hoping that we could dictate tempo late. But we were gassed.”
Madelyn LeJeune had a quick putback to start the fourth quarter that tied the game at 32-32 and another free throw by Romero knotted the score up at 35 midway through the frame.
After the third tie of the quarter, the Lady Dragons drove the lane and got a layup and the Lady Pios weren’t able to respond.
Lyons led the Lady Pios with 14 points and Romero had eight. Miller followed with seven points, LeJeune scored four, Elise LeBeouf had three and Hanna Esthay finished with two.
The Lady Pios took on Lake Arthur Saturday but results from that contest were not available at press time.
