Johnson powers Lady Dogs past Midland

MIDLAND – Brittany Johnson has been the Iota Lady Bulldogs’ go-to person whenever they’ve needed a clutch performance.
And Friday evening when the Lady Dogs took on Midland in the final girls game of the evening in the MHS Holiday Spectacular, she was once again the player who took charge.
With Iota clinging to a 36-32 lead late in the fourth quarter, the junior guard took matters into her own hands, scoring nine straight points to help the Lady Dogs surge to a 47-32 victory.
Johnson hit four 3-pointers on the night, all in the second half and finished up with a game-high 22 points.
Midland, on the other hand, struggled to find much offensive consistency in the second half and scored just 16 points in the final two frames. The Lady Rebels were held scoreless in the final three and a half minutes of the contest.
The Lady Rebels fell behind 8-4 early in the first quarter but rallied at the end of the frame and took an 11-10 lead on a basket by Nicole Kraut just before the buzzer.
Katie Woods then drove the lane for a layup to start the second quarter to extend the Lady Rebels’ advantage to 13-10.
Iota answered with a basket and a pair of free throws by Johnson and took a five-point advantage before Tori Craigen’s 3-point trimmed the Lady Dogs’ lead to 18-16 at the break.
Iota opened the third quarter on a 6-0 run in the first two minutes and eventually took a 30-25 cushion into the final frame courtesy of a 3-pointer by Johnson late in the frame.
The Lady Dogs led by as many as nine early in the final stanza before a 3-pointer by Katie Woods and a jumper in the lane by Kristen Breaux cut the advantage to five with just over three minutes remaining.
Mallory Faul followed Johnson with 10 points and Jillian Boone scored seven. Taylor Deville pitched in four points while Cameron Crochet and Alexis St. Andre rounded out the Lady Dogs’ offense with two points each.
Midland was led by Breaux’s 13-point performance. Woods followed with seven points, Kraut added six and Craigen and Brooke Comeaux each had three.
