Lady Dogs top Acadiana; Pios slip past Iota
LAFAYETTE – The Iota Lady Bulldogs exploded for 29 points in the third quarter and rallied from an early deficit to upend Acadiana, 65-61, Saturday in the Lady Rams’ own tournament.
The Lady Dogs improved to 5-3 on the season with the victory.
The Lady Rams jumped out to a 29-17 lead at the break before the Lady Dogs caught fire in the third quarter.
Jillian Boone poured in 14 of her game-high 29 points in the frame and Brittany Johnson pitched in eight to help the Lady Dogs take a 46-45 advantage.
Johnson then went 9-for-10 from the free throw line down the stretch in the final frame as Iota outscored the Lady Rams 19-16 to seal the victory.
Johnson finished the night with 20 points while Mallory Faul had eight and Whitney Landry had four. Cameron Crochet and Madison Smith each added two points in the victory.
Notre Dames slips past Iota
HACKBERRY – The Notre Dame Pioneers grabbed an early lead and then held off a late rally to upend Iota, 44-35, in the consolation finals of the Hackberry Tournament Saturday.
The Pios led 22-15 cushion at the break and outscored the Dogs 9-0 in the third quarter to take a 31-15 lead into the final frame.
Iota cut the lead to three in the final eight minutes, but the Dogs were never able to get over the hump despite outscoring the Pios 20-13 in the final eight minutes.
Sophomore Hunter Meche and Claiton Johnson paced the Pios with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Tre Milstead followed with 10 points and also pulled down 14 rebounds. Brice Brandon added eight points and Alex Thomas had three.
Luke Reed led the charge for Iota with 14 points. Garrett Reppond pitched in seven points, Steven Cooper scored five, Zack Hebert had four, Curtis Antonie and Bray Latiolais each had two and Deandre Curtis finished with one.
