Lady Pios claim eight medals at state swim meet
SULPHUR – Notre Dame sophomore Erin Trahan helped lead the Lady Pios to a fourth place finish in the 2013 Division III state championship swim meet last week.
Trahan, who earned the female Swimmer of the Meet award, broke her own state record in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.19 seconds. She then swam an impressive time of 57.16 in the 100-yard butterfly to capture the title in that event as well.
Senior Sarah Simar added to the Lady Pios’ point total with a silver medal in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 59.83, just behind Trahan. Simar also placed second in the 100-yard breast stroke with a time of 1:09.30.
Sophomore Emily Lawson finished second in the 200-yard freestyle with a personal best time of 2:04.47. She was also second in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 57.34.
Freshman Abigail Kilgore teamed with Trahan, Simar and Lawson to claim top honors in the 400-freestyle relay. Their relay team also placed fourth in the 200-yard individual medley relay.
The Lady Pios competed against 19 schools with only four swimmers and managed to place four overall.
These outstanding swimmers will be presented with their medals at the Notre Dame School Liturgy on Wednesday, December 4.
Also competing at the state meet for Notre Dame on the boys side were Joshua Kilgore in the 500-yard free style and the 100-yard butterfly, Hans Prevost in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard butterfly and Nick Moore in the 200-yard individual medley. These boys along with Cody LeBlanc and Chase McBride made up the 200- and 400- yard freestyle relays.
Kilgore made it to constellation heat and competed in the 100-yard butterfly, swimming a 1:09.46 to finish 16th in the event.
