Midland blows past ESA; Lady Rebels fall to VC
MIDLAND – Any worries the Midland Rebels may have had after last Friday’s upset loss to Lacassine were quickly erased Monday night.
The Rebels, who shot just 21 percent in a 39-37 loss to the Cardinals last week, caught fire early and, led by Devin Gautreaux and Nick Primeaux, cruised to a 63-16 victory over ESA Monday in a District 7-B contest.
Gautreaux and Primeaux got the Rebels (19-3, 3-1) going in the first quarter by scoring eight points each as the Rebels got off to a 26-1 lead.
Each finished with 12 points.
Darren Arceneaux took over in the second quarter and poured in nine of his game-high 15 points in the frame to help push the Rebels’ lead to 39-10 at the half.
The Rebels continued their dominance in the third quarter by going on a 15-0 run to take a 54-10 advantage. Jake Gautreaux scored five of his 11 points during the run.
Reserves Dagan Patin and Taatum Rubin accounted for all nine of the Rebels’ points in the fourth quarter. Patin scored five points on the night twhile Rubin and Randy Primeaux each pitched in four.
The Rebels return to action on Friday when they travel to Bell City to take on the Bruins in a pivotal league contest.
Lady Rebels fall short
In Abbeville, the Lady Rebels battled from an early deficit, but they were unable to withstand a fourth-quarter surge by Vermilion Catholic Monday evening.
The VC Lady Eagles outscored Midland 16-9 in the fourth quarter and slipped past the Lady Rebels, 44-37, in a non-district matchup.
The Lady Rebels (16-13) led 13-11 after the first quarter behind a pair of 3- pointers from Bethany LeJeune.
The Lady Eagles responded by outscoring the visitors 15-3 in the second quarter and to take a 26-16 advantage at the break.
The Lady Rebels answered back and tied the game at 30-30 at the end of the third quarter before VC took over in the final frame.
Macy Hoffpauir paced the Lady Rebels with 10 points and Kristen Breaux had eight. Nicole Kraut added seven points, LeJeune scored six, Brook Comeaux had five and Katie Woods finished with one.
