Prep Roundup: Lady Dogs, CHS Ladies, Pios earn victories

KINDER – Abigail Leonards stymied the Kinder Lady Yellow Jackets and her offense gave her more than enough run support Thursday in an 8-2 Iota victory.
It was Iota’s second victory over the Lady Yellow Jackets in just over a week. The Lady Dogs also defeated Kinder, 7-4, last weekend in the Eunice Tournament.
“This was the second time they have seen Abigail in a week and I thought she did a great job of battling through the weather and their lineup,” said IHS coach Leah Andrus of Leonards, who gave up just four hits and two walks while striking out five Thursday. “Even when our defense did not make the plays, she battled through it.”
Offensively, the Lady Dogs pounded out nine hits on the day in a game that saw them score in five of the seven innings.
McKenzie Armand led the charge with a 3-for-3 performance that included a sixth-inning home run and three RBI.
Leonards followed with a pair of singles and a RBI and Sarah Johnson had two hits, including a double. Heather Gardner tripled in a run in and Rhianna Stephens had a double.
“We have been working a lot on getting our front foot down and letting the ball get deep,” said Andrus. “We are really starting to show all the hard work our girls put in each day, even with the craziness of the weather. We’ve made an effort to get quality cuts in at practice every day and I think it is really starting to show in the games.”
Crowley Ladies
thump Opelousas

CROWLEY – The Crowley Ladies made short work of Opelousas Thursday and disposed of the Lady Tigers in three innings, 16-1, in a District 4-4A contest.
The Ladies broke open a 1-1 game in the second inning with seven runs before posting eight  more runs in the third to close out the contest by virtue of the mercy rule.
The Ladies pounded out six hits on the day and took advantage of eight walks and six Opelousas walks in the victory.
Maddie LeBouef paced the Ladies with two hits and two RBI while Skylor Huval plated a pair of runs on one hit. Melanina Doughty followed with a double and an RBI; Erica Thibodeaux had a single and an RBI; Kristen Bonin had one hit and Bailee Villejoin collected two RBI on a pair of bases-loaded walks. Taylor Grabowski and Lauren Breaux also logged one RBI each in the victory.
Pios slip past Westlake
MOSS BLUFF – The Notre Dame Pios rallied for a single run in the bottom of the seventh inning Thursday to slip past Westlake, 5-4, in the opening round of the SWLA Shootout Tournament hosted by Sam Houston.
The Pios (2-3) trailed 2-0 after two innings before exploding for four runs in the bottom of the third inning. Sam Veillon had an RBI double while Gavin Bourgeois, Joe Faulk and Jacob Mooney each recorded run-scoring singles during the rally.
Westlake answered back with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings and the score remained tied at 4-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh.
Bourgeois got the Pios going in the seventh when he led off the frame with an infield single and he moved to second base on a throwing error. He then stole third and after back-to-back walks to load the bases, he scored the game winning run on a passed ball.
Bourgeois and Veillon paced the Pios with two hits and one RBI each while Faulk and Mooney each had one hit and one RBI. Jeff Daigle and Alex Rozas each had one hit on the day.
Six Pio pitchers combined to give up just three hits on the day. They also struck out six with Faulk earning the victory after one inning of relief work.
