Queb's Picks: LSU-Florida game headlines this week's contest
This week’s prep football slate is filled with a number of interesting matchups, but the one game that everyone is waiting for takes place on Saturday in Death Valley - LSU vs. Florida.
Anytime the Gators venture to Baton Rouge, it’s a big deal regardless of the records or rankings.
This year, however, both teams find themselves with one loss on the young season. No. 18 Florida is 3-1 overall and 2-0 in SEC play, while No. 10 LSU is 3-1 and 2-0.
Will LSU be able to avenge last year’s 14-6 loss in Gainesville?
Will the Tigers’ defense, especially the secondary, finally show up?
Or will Florida, with the top-ranked defense in the SEC, be able to slow down Zach Mettenberger and pull off a monumental upset in the Valley?
Personally, I can’t see the Tigers dropping this one.
I do think Florida will put points on the board, probably a bunch. But I think LSU will put up more.
I’ve got the Tigers, baby.
Now, before we venture off to the rest of this week’s picks, let’s have a look at last week’s contest results:
My buddy Dennis Fontenot, known to most as “Sup,” destroyed the competition last week, missing just two games. As was the case with most contestants, he missed out on the Rayne-LaGrange game and just one college contest.
Doug LaCombe and Greg Monceaux each lost three games, but LaCombe claimed runnersup honors by virtue of the tiebreaker.
As for myself, it was a five-loss week, which actually wasn’t that bad considering most of the contestants dropped seven games or better.
Now, for the other picks:
Starting off locally in the high school ranks, I’m taking Notre Dame over West St. Mary. Not to disrespect any of the teams left on their schedule, but there really isn’t a team left that can give the Pios much of a run.
I’m also going with the Crowley Gents over Washington Marion. The Gents are getting better and better every week and, hopefully, that trend will continue tonight.
I’m also taking Rayne over Morgan City and Church Point over Pine Prairie.
Unfortunately, I can’t be a homer on the Iota-Iowa game. The Yellow Jackets look to be contenders in Class 3A and the Bulldogs are still struggling to find an identity. I’m taking Iowa by a few scores.
In other prep games, I’m taking Rummel over Shaw, University over Parkview, Lutcher over St. Michael, Vinton over Welsh, Loreauville over Opelousas Catholic, Erath over Abbeville, Beau Chene over Opelousas and Port Barre over Ville Platte.
In the college games I’m taking TCU over Kansas, Michigan State over Indiana, Wisconsin over Northwestern, Georgia over Missouri, USC over Arizona and Oklahoma over Texas.
