IOTA – A cold shooting night from both the floor and free throw line proved costly for Iota’s Lady Bulldogs Friday.

The Lady Dogs shot a dismal 37 percent from the floor and an even worse 27 percent from the charity stripe in their showdown with No. 4-ranked St. Louis.

The result was predictable: St. Louis 61, Iota 49.

“I don’t think, emotionally, we’ve recovered from the Jennings game,” said Iota coach Stan Baggett, whose team dropped a grueling 71-63 contest to second-ranked Jennings Tuesday. “An inexperienced, young team like this, we were sky high for the Jennings game and tonight, we were just totally out of it. That game took a toll on us and we just weren’t ready to go tonight.”

The loss dropped Iota to 20-10 overall and 2-3 in District 4-AAA

The fatigue showed early for Iota. The Lady Dogs were just 1-for-4 from the free throw line in the first quarter. In addition, they missed three shots in the paint as well as missing all six of their 3-point attempts in the early goings.

St. Louis took full advantage, jumping out to a 14-3 lead in the first quarter before taking a 30-23 advantage at the half.

“That was the ballgame right there,” said Baggett. “They outscored us 14-3 in the first quarter and we never were able to recover.”

Iota made a run midway through the third quarter when they cut the lead to 34-30 with 5:40 remaining. However, the rally was cut short following two missed free throws and an Iota turnover.

St. Louis went on a 9-4 run to end the frame, taking a 43-34 cushion into the final frame.

“We were down four and you could sense the momentum was with us,” said Baggett. “But once again, missed free throws and a few turnovers allowed them to open it back up.”

St. Louis hit the first shot of the fourth quarter and Iota was never able to get within single digits after that.

St. Louis forward Jazzmin Smith led a trio of Lady Saints in double figures with 15 points. She was followed by Paige Gauthier with 14 points and Megan Buckley with 11. Guard Jalicia Bilbo also scored nine points.

Allison Baggett paced the Lady Dogs with 20 points and Jade LeJeune had 13. Katie Latiola and Tori Stroderd each scored four points, Ana Lege scored three and Katelyn Regan and Ashley Hargrave each scored two.

Iota returns to action Tuesday when they play host to Pineville.
