Summer reading program deemed as successful

CROWLEY – Acadia Parish’s summer reading program has recently wrapped up it’s 2008 session. “We had a very successful summer reading program this year,” Ms. Bernie Sarver said excitedly. For the past ten years, Sarver has faithfully headed the infamous summer reading program at the Crowley library branch. During the past three years, Sarver has traveled also each week to the Rayne, Church Point, Iota, Estherwood, Morse, and Mermentau branches of the library as well.

“I would definitely have to say that over the past two to three years, we have seen a great jump in the number of children participating.” She reported that attendance each week for this summer has ranged between 65 and 80 children,” she continued, “It’s wonderful that parents are taking an interest in their children’s reading. It is so important,” Sarver cited.

The Crowley branch library held its final story hour on Wednesday, July 23. It was a fun-filled celebration that included a guest author, Herbie Thorpe, author of a series of books about Herbie Bear. These books will be available for check-out at the library beginning on Monday, July 28. Other activities during the finale were hoola-hoop and jump-roping.

Prizes were given to the winners of the coloring contest, as well as the overall top reader for the program. As children said their good-byes, each received a farewell gift for their attendance.
